The summer award seasons are over. From the Emmys to the MTV music awards, style was there to inspire us from head-to-toe. Some of the best looks were those worn by African American celebs including Teyonah, Halle Berry and Kelly Rowland. This inspired us to take a look at some of our favorite black hairstyles for special occasions. From topknots to royal braids – these looks will inspire you.
Sleek and Chic Topknot
A gorgeous topknot is perfect for every occasion. One thing that we love about topknots for black women is that they are so versatile. If you have big thick hair then why not add a braid before you complete a topknot, if your hair is shorter and finer then leave it a little tousled. If you have straight and shiny hair then keep it simple with a section of hair wrapped around the base of the knot.
Soft Tousled Waves
Regardless if you have long hair, a short bob or shoulder-length tresses, soft waves are perfect for every special event. Complete your waves with lots of volume and shine for a perfected look. We recommend parting your hair to the side and teasing the crown. All you need is a little hairspray for a look that will last the entire event.
Tight Curl Afro with Accessories
If you have naturally beautiful tight curls that resemble a mane – then rock them. There are few looks are gorgeous as your natural hairstyle. If you don’t feel that your natural tresses are formal enough for the event then add some accessories that compliment both the theme of the occasion and your outfit. Another great idea is to pull up the sides to create a Mohawk look.
Kelly Rowland wore a royal braid hairstyle to the MTV music awards and we loved her entire look. The long flowing gown looked perfect with this look. If you are attending a summer event and opting for a maxi dress then pair it with this gorgeous hairstyle.
Nothing says special occasion like an updo. Black women look jaw-dropping beautiful when they style their tresses in a voluminous updo. By creating a big ‘poof’ in the front of your head but keeping the sides slicked back, you are making a statement.
