As we age, our styles change. We stop wearing clothes from the younger sections and start shopping in ‘career’ or ‘women’s. We trade silhouettes for comfortable flats and crop tops for cardigans. It’s an opportunity to try new styles, including hairstyles that flatter our age, and hide some beauty marks. So, what is the best looking hairstyle for woman who’s over 40?
A Shoulder Length Cut is Very Popular
A shoulder-length cut with side-swept bangs and soft face framing layers.
But, this cut is versatile and should be made to fit your personality and hair type. Here are some of our favorite takes on the look:
Asymmetrical Cut for Women over 40
The perfect look for work and play. This look works because it creates an illusion that draws eyes away from the center of your face and towards the angled cut. Add layers to add the softness you often want as you age. A subtle asymmetrical bob will give your haircut edge, if you’re looking for something a little more bold than opt for a few inches in difference.
Bob with Side-Swept Bangs and Soft Layers
Shoulder-length cuts work because they push the hair back and this strengthens the neck and cheekbones. But, as we age our faces become more defined and the classic chin-length bob is perfect to show off your facial features. The soft layers and side-swept bangs will hide blemishes and keep the haircut fun.
Blunt Bangs with Soft Layers
Side-swept bangs are recommended because they make your face look softer. But, blunt bangs hide forehead wrinkles and draw eyes inward away from wrinkles and towards your eyes. They are best oval and long face shapes.
Shag Layers with Side-Swept Bangs
Keep the side-swept bangs and the layers but rather than opting for soft layers, freshen up your look with choppy shag layers. This look can work for both fine and thick hair, but we don’t recommend it if you have thick hair. The choppy layers will create plenty of volume, something women over 40 can find is more difficult to obtain.
As you get a little older, you will want to change up your look to fit your personality and lifestyle. Keep your hair texture, face shape and personality in mind when you make these decisions.
