  • Tips for Making Your Own Beard Balm:

Why Make Your Own Beard Balm?

Before we get into the actual recipes, let’s consider why making your own beard balm may be a good choice. Here are some of the advantages that may come with making your own beard balm, either on your own or by following a recipe.

Cost Effective

Do it yourself beard balms can be surprisingly inexpensive when compared to products that you can just go buy. The biggest reason for the price difference is that manufacturers have tons of overhead that they have to cover by selling their products. So even the most inexpensive products will likely still cost more than making your own unless they are just made with poor quality ingredients, and then you probably wouldn’t want them anyway.

Customized to Your Needs

Perhaps the biggest advantage of making your own beard care products, like beard balms, oils, and waxes, is that you get to tailor the ingredients to fit your individual needs. Fighting beard dandruff; increase the ratio of Shea butter. Those with sensitive skin can especially benefit from being able to adjust the amounts of ingredients they may be particularly affected by.

You can also adjust the beard balm after you’ve used it. Well that is except it would be hard to remove ingredients, you can however add. Maybe once it is made and you’ve tried it, you decide you want a stronger fragrance, no problem, melt it, add in a few extra drops of your desired essential oil and voila, a stronger scent in no time. You really shouldn’t attempt to do the same with a brand name product to avoid some weird interactions between ingredients.

You Know What it Contains

Everywhere you go, online or in a brick and mortar store, you will see claims that a product is made of natural ingredients. Phrases like paraben and sulfate-free and cruelty-free are very common in any skin care product. But the truth is there is very little regulation regarding many of these statements, so you can never be 100% sure these products are as they claim.

When you make your own beard balm you have complete knowledge of every single ingredient that goes into it. You can choose to use only the highest quality ingredients, or go for lower quality, cheaper version; it’s up to you.

What do You Need to Make Your Own Beard Balm?

You may be surprised at how simple it can be to create your own beard balm. The hard part is going to be deciding on a recipe.

When purchasing your ingredients, you are going to want to consider using the highest quality ingredients you can get your hands on. Look for 100% organic ingredients whenever possible, as they have to have been thoroughly checked in order to make that claim

Here is everything you need to make your own beard balm, and the possible options.

Beeswax:

An all-natural product that is found in different skin and beard care products. Provides an excellent base for a beard balm. The concentration can be adjusted depending on the level of style hold you may want your beard balm to deliver. However, be careful, too much beeswax in your beard balm and you end up with a beard wax instead.

Natural Butter:

Butters provide moisture and hydration to your beard. Including natural butter in your beard balm help make the balm more spreadable, as well as providing a great balance between the harder beeswax and carrier oils.

There are many different natural kinds of butter to choose from and butters can be used together, for even more power. Here are some of the most popular and what additional benefits they may provide.

    • Shea Butter – Shea Butter is one of the most popular butters. This butter provides tons of benefits to the skin and beard hair, which is why you can find Shea butter in many skin care products, such as lotions, creams, body bars, soaps, as well as commercially made beard balms.

Shea Butter is high in vitamins A, E, and F and when added to your beard balm recipe helps to eliminate beard dandruff and itchiness. You may even experience increased beard growth.

  • Cocoa Butter – Another very popular butter, Cocoa Butter is also very common in skin care product. In addition to being great for providing essential moisture and hydration, Cocoa Butter helps to get rid of the dreaded itch and decrease beard dandruff, likely due to the high levels of vitamin E.
  • Nut and Seed Butters – Derived from nuts and seeds, like Almond Butter or Hemp Seed Butter. Not only do these butters provide moisture and hydration, but their high protein content helps to support the collagen production in the skin for smoother skin texture and improved beard growth.
  • Mango Butter – Mango Butter is often combined with Shea or Cocoa Butters. Made from the seed of mangos, this butter contains high levels of essential fatty acids and antioxidants. This is a great addition for individuals that fight beard dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, or have otherwise sensitive skin.
  • Kokum Butter – Individuals with super sensitive skin or especially stubborn beard dandruff with benefit from Kokum Butter’s antioxidant properties. This butter is often used as an alternative to stronger butters, or for those with severe allergies. Kokum Butter also has some anti-aging benefits as well.

Carrier Oil:

Carrier Oils are the main vessel for thinning out the thick butters and beeswax. Carrier oils provide increased absorption of all of the premium vitamins and nutrients in beard balms. There are additional benefits associated with each type of carrier oil and here are some of the most commonly used carrier oils found in beard balms and their individual benefits. Carrier oils can also be combined for even better results.

Additional Tools:

Now that we have gotten the actual ingredients out of the way, there are some things that you will probably need to actually make the beard balm. Although don’t worry if you are missing some of these items, not all of them are required.

You can make your own beard balm with a microwave, a bowl, and something to mix it together. You are likely though to want to repeat the process in the future, and having the right tools can make the whole process easier. So here are some of the tools that you may want to have on hand.

Digital Scale:

We suggest using a digital scale for convenience. You may have noticed you are going to be dealing with ingredients in different states, some solid like beeswax, some liquid like oils, and some that fall in between.

You can make measuring all of these types easier by using a digital scale that can be easily converted between types of measurements. A digital scale will be especially beneficial if you decide to multiply your favorite recipe, as you can quickly move away from other common measuring tool capacities.

Melting Pot:

You need to be able to melt the thicker ingredients, such as beeswax, and often the butter you choose. There are several ways to melt these ingredients.

Wax Warmer – A wax warmer, or even a small crockpot can be used to melt your wax and butter. The big advantage of using these is that you will get a more even melt than by using other methods. If you do choose to use a crockpot, we would suggest not using it to make food afterward, just for safety.

Non-Stick Pan – When you do not have a melting pot, you can use a non-stick pan on your stove over low heat. This method will require constant attention, including stirring, to avoid scorching your beard balm. Butters are especially prone to this, much like the butter or margarine you probably use in cooking.

A similar, safer option would be to use a double boiler. In either case, just like the crockpot method, you would probably not want to use the pan to cook food after making your beard balm.

Microwave – In the absence of any other option, you can use a microwave, with a microwave safe container, to melt your ingredients. While simple, this process is the most time consuming and can be frustrating. If you have ever tried to melt chocolate chips in the microwave you will understand why. You must melt your ingredients in very small increments; 30 to 60 seconds at a time, max! As you can imagine, especially for beeswax this could take a while. But it is possible.

Mixer:

Another optional tool that we highly recommend is a hand mixer (or stand mixer if you prefer). After melting your ingredients, you will want to combine them as thoroughly as possible for the best results. An electric mixer makes this process extremely simple. An added benefit to using a mixer is that you are able to whip the ingredients, incorporating air into the mixture; for a smoother, creamer beard balm.

Stirring Utensil:

Whether you use a mixer or not you will need some kind of stirring utensil, even if just to help get the finished product out of the bowl. You can use almost anything from traditional spoons, we would suggest stainless steel, to wooden dowels. You can also purchase stir sticks like those used by soap makers in bulk very inexpensively. These allow you to never have to worry about cleaning your spoon, or mistakenly mixing ingredients you do not intend to go together.

Container:

Finally, you are going to want something to store your beard balm in. There are tons of options here. However, to ensure that your beard balm lasts as long as possible, we suggest using containers that seal completely.

You can find cosmetic grade tins and jars almost anywhere, but a really good choice is to grab some wide-mouthed mason jars. Not only are they available almost anywhere, but they also seal great to protect your beard balm. They can also be reused over and over, and make a great container if you choose to make beard balm for gifts.

Tips for Making Your Own Beard Balm:

Here are just a few quick tips for getting the most out of making your own beard balm.

Try Different Recipes: Don’t stop at one recipe, each recipe in this guide offers their own unique benefits. You can scale a recipe down at first to make a sample-sized portion, or make a large batch of the basic balm and customize it in smaller batches by adding the smaller ingredients later.

Tailor the Recipe for Your Needs: Making your own beard balm would not be as rewarding if you just ended up with the same boring balm that you can buy anywhere. Tailoring a recipe or even coming up with your own allows you to have a beard balm for your specific needs in beard and skin care. We are all individuals, and so are our beards.

Use Organic Ingredients: As mentioned above, especially for sensitive skinned individuals, opting for organic ingredients whenever possible will help to keep out any scary or harmful things that may cause issues, or have an effect on your beard balm. When purchasing your ingredients make sure you are using only reputable companies. And you should be aware that companies located in different parts of the world may have different regulations regarding sourcing and selling these ingredients. Don’t get scammed by getting inferior products (or none at all, yikes!!)

Conclusion

That should just about cover everything that you need to know to make your own beard balm. Whether you decide to follow one of the amazing recipes we’ve included, or feel inspired to try your hand at developing your own, you will love the feeling of accomplishment that making your own high-quality products can bring.
