Some Things to Consider

Now that you’ve seen what’s available, let’s discuss what goes into making a quality body groomer. Apply this information while you’re shopping to ensure you choose the best one for your body.

Size and Weight

It is important that you take into account the size and weight of your potential investment. A unit that is too heavy will have a negative impact on its performance. You want a groomer that is easy to handle. The more versatile, the better.

Since you’ll be trimming hard-to-reach areas of your body, you want a model that is easy to maneuver. Let’s look at why this is important in the following 2 sections.

Lightweight is Good

A lightweight body groomer will go a long way in ensuring that you get a good trim. This makes doing the job comfortable without straining your arms and neck.

One that is heavy can be cumbersome and difficult to work with. Trust us, a few minutes into it and you’ll wish you had bought a lighter model.

Too Light is Bad

If you got a groomer that is too lightweight, you risk jeopardizing quality, as well. This often means that corners were cut in the manufacturing of the unit in order to reduce costs.

It’s important to find the right balance of quality and versatility. This will ensure that you’re getting a unit that lasts without compromising performance.

Corded or Battery Powered

Grooming your entire body requires you to have the freedom necessary to reach every inch of yourself. Logically, a corded groomer will serve to interfere with your performance. It’s important that you get a cordless, battery-powered model to ensure you have a comfortable time.

It’s certainly alright for the unit to work via its power cord as a secondary backup. You just want to make sure that you’re using it in cordless mode all other times. If you happen to run out of battery power, it’s nice to have the cord to fall back on in a pinch.

Having a cord not only gets in the way, it also serves to make the groomer unbalanced and hard to operate. This is because it is adding extra weight to the unit. Having an unbalanced groomer can lead to accidental nicks and cuts.

Another thing that’s important to consider is the battery life. You want your groomer to provide plenty of time to successfully complete your desired grooming. You never want to feel rushed, as this often results in messy work or cuts.

Wet/Dry Use

Grooming your body can be a messy job. Those who prefer to do it while standing on their bathroom floor will have a lot to clean up afterward. If you’re not on board with grooming in the shower, we suggest that you take it into serious consideration.

Grooming in the shower has many benefits. All those clipped hairs will travel down the drain. This will save you a great deal of cleaning. Who wants to spend their evening making sure they’ve gotten every last rogue hair after a good groom?

Another huge plus is that it will be much more comfortable. Ideally, you want your body to be hot. This will allow the hair to stand up better. The hot shower water will also soften up your hair a great deal. Softer hair is always easier to cut compared to dry, stiff hair.

We prefer grooming in the shower because it affords the ability to try out nice smelling lotions and shaving creams. The body often has an odor after a fresh grooming. If you want your body to look its best, you likely want it to smell its best, as well.

Be sure to research your potential purchase to make sure it is safe for use in the shower. The models that are will say “waterproof”. If it says “water-resistant”, it is not safe to take with you into the shower. Water-resistant just means that you can run it under water to rinse it.

And that brings us to another benefit of shower use. It’s a great way to clean the groomer as you go. You’d be surprised at how much time this saves you every time you groom yourself.

You don’t have to meticulously clean the unit after you’ve trimmed. A hard, hot shower will usually do the trick in no time flat.

The Blades

It’s a good idea to get a groomer that uses high-quality materials in the blades. Subpar metals will rust, corrode, and dull really quickly.

Some fine examples of good blades include stainless steel, surgical, and chromium. These metals are known for their high durability and long-lasting properties. You won’t have to worry about pulled hairs or dulling. And they certainly won’t rust or develop corrosion.

Another good feature to keep an eye out for is self-sharpening blades. Models that sport this work to keep your blades performing at their highest level. Self-sharpening blades continually sharpen while you groom!

This means that your blades will cut just as smoothly and evenly as the day you bought your groomer. This goes a long way in ensuring that you get lots of service out of your investment.

Groomer Maintenance

You’ve likely surmised by now that your body groomer requires some attention to keep it performing well. Some more so than others. Let’s briefly discuss some of the care they need for optimal grooming.

Clean the Blades

This is by far one of the most important things you can do for your groomer. Blades that are ignored will develop all kinds of problems. You have to consider what they go through every time you use them. You can’t readily see it, but those blades are coming in direct contact with body oils, built-up dirt, and microscopic bacteria.

Using the groomer without cleaning the blades is a great way to spread all of that around your body. This is especially true if you accidentally cut yourself while grooming. The blades will still have traces of all that funk on them.

Cutting yourself with dirty blades is a quick way of introducing bacteria into your bloodstream. This is a problem you don’t want to have on your hands.

You want to develop a strict habit of cleaning your blades after each and every use. Some models just need to be rinsed under running hot water. If you have a waterproof groomer, you can simply let the shower do the cleaning for you.

Blade Spray

There are all kinds of products available that are made specifically for cleaning your blades. One of the fastest and easiest is blade spray. It has several purposes that will serve you and your body groomer well.

The most important is that of a disinfectant. Spraying down your blades will fight off that nasty bacteria we mentioned a moment ago, as well as grime and build-up.

Some groomers tend to get hot after using them for so long. Blade spray works to cool down the blades so you can continue to comfortably trim yourself.

Many brands also act as a lubricant to keep your blades running smoothly. Those who opt for a non-waterproof groomer would do well to invest in some spray. It makes maintenance a breeze and takes only a couple of seconds to effectively clean, disinfect, and lubricate your blades.

Alignment

Some body groomers don’t require you to align the blades. It all depends on the brand and model you have. It’s a good idea to thoroughly read the instructions to determine whether you need to do this.

Most models that do require it are fairly easy to align. Some have to have screws loosened to where you can comfortably shift the blades. It’s as easy as moving the blades to where they match up evenly with one another.

It’s important that you align the leftmost blades of each set. One should rest evenly on top of the other. Now you’re ready to tighten the screws. Be sure to squeeze the blades firmly while you tighten so that you don’t have to go back and do the process all over again.

Oil the Blades

This is tantamount to ensuring that your groomer continues working properly. Failure to do so will result in pulled hairs, uneven cutting, and burns.

It’s best to oil your blades at least once a month. You typically want to apply one or two drops. Doing this is quick and easy.

Simply turn on your groomer and aim it toward the floor. Apply the necessary amount while it’s running. This will allow the oil to thoroughly work itself between the blades.

Philips Norelco OneBlade Face + Body HybridView on Amazon

We included the OneBlade due to its exceptional performance and clever design. You’re getting the versatility and precision of a razor, and the adjustable lengths of an electric shaver. This combines to deliver a user-friendly, high-quality body groomer.

It even sports a flexible head that makes it easy to get difficult areas. The precise grooming this unit provides cannot be overstated. You’ll find that it gives you one of the best trims of any model currently available.

The blades used are long-lasting, to say the least. You can expect to get up to 4 months of use from a single blade. The only drawback to them is that they are pretty expensive to replace. You get 2 with the groomer, but you’ll have to buy any extras that you’ll eventually need.

The battery life of the OneBlade is commendable, as well. You can look forward to getting a total of an hour and a half per charge. Recharging the unit takes about an hour to complete.

You can take this groomer with you in the shower, too, if you like. It’s equally convenient to keep clean, as you simply run it under hot water.

The best part is that this unit is reasonably priced considering everything that it does. You’re getting salon-quality grooming with a model that has plenty of longevity.
