March 6, 2019 by Hazel Lake

You sit at your favorite salon and think it looks easy. That “you can do this at home.” However, when you do try it at home, you realize you lack a third arm. Isn’t it absolutely aggravating how your hairstylists sprout a new arm the moment you look away?

What Are Rotating Air Brushes?

For a girl who likes curls, rotating air brushes are a dream. These devices combine a blow-dryer and a round brush. Effectively, they’re round brushes that blow out hot air from carefully placed holes on the barrel. The cherry on the cake is that they rotate!

In fact, you won’t need to use two hands to curl your hair with a rotating air brush. More importantly, their rotating feature will take away the need for you to do wrist and arm acrobatics every time you curl your hair.

Curling your hair will get simplified into brushing your hair, but you’ll get salon-style blowouts every time!

Which Rotating Air Brushes Are Right for You?

If you like curls or even wavy hair, you can’t help but see the huge advantages of rotating air brushes. However, you can’t just rush into a purchase. All rotating air brushes may not be perfect for your specific needs. You’ll need to consider some things before deciding to buy one.

The most important thing you’ll need to consider will be barrel thickness. If you have thick, long, and curly tresses, then you’ll need to pick thicker barrels. On the other hand, if you have shorter or finer hair, then you can pick thinner barrels. Generally, women with long length hair pick 2-inch barrels while those with medium or short length hair go for 1.5-inch or 1-inch barrels.

Thick-haired women should also look at the power output of the device. Devices with an output rating of only 500 watts may not be enough to deal with their hair.

While such devices will still work, you’ll need to run it over your hair multiple times in a single sitting to get the desired outcome. In contrast, low powered devices should work fine for you if you don’t have ultra-thick hair.

Technology is also something you’ll have to consider. The latest technologies such as tourmaline ceramic and nano-titanium should be picked over older ones because they’re healthier for the hair. Similarly, you should always go for devices with ionic technology unless you’ve never faced problems like frizzy and flyaway hair in life.

Two other variables you should consider are weight and voltage compatibility. If you plan on traveling a lot with your rotating air brush, you’ll want it to be relatively compact and light. Lighter, more compact devices are also easier to use in general. Further, if you plan on taking the device to Europe, Africa, or Asia, then you’ll need it to be a dual voltage device.

Top 3 Premium Rotating Air Brushes: Detailed Reviews

1. Revlon Perfect Heat Tourmaline Ceramic Rotating Hot Air Styler Spin Brush Dryer

Editor’s Rating: 3.5/5.0

Revlon Perfect Heat Tourmaline Ceramic Rotating Hot Air Styler Spin Brush DryerView on Amazon

Revlon is already a big name, but when it comes to hair styling devices, they are true giants. In the rotating air brush market segment, their best offering is the Perfect Heat Rotating Hot Air Styler.

This rotating air brush is ideal for women with long hair. Its barrel spans two inches across and can deliver some gloriously voluminous curls. The thickness of the barrel will ensure that you don’t need to spend too much time getting the curls either.

Further, this device is an excellent choice if you have extra-thick hair that needs constant de-tangling. It is powerful enough to handle even the toughest of tangles with an output rating of 900 watts.

One area where this device beats most other rotating air brushes is that it doesn’t pull hair. The barrel sports soft bristles which ensure that hairs don’t get caught and pulled. However, the flip side of soft bristles is that they don’t grip your hair well enough. Therefore, if you have fine hair, this brush may not be a good choice for you.

This device is based around tourmaline ceramic technology. As a result, it heats up uniformly and guarantees stable heat transfer. Speaking of heat, this device has three heat settings including a cold shot setting for fixing curls in place.

The biggest issue with this air rotating brush is it’s astronomical price, especially considering that it doesn’t have built-in ionic technology. You’ll have to shell out more than a $100 to get this rotating air brush unless you can find some discounts or deals.

When you spend so much, you expect your device to last a very long time. This air brush doesn’t even offer that. It breaks down far too quickly and usually, it is the rotating function that gives out on you. The only saving grace is that it comes with a 2-year warranty and Revlon is a reputable company that will honor its promises.

You should also know that you can’t take this device to Europe and Asia since it doesn’t support the 220V power systems there. It is only built for use in the US and Canada’s 110V power systems.

Who’s it for: If money is not a concern for you and you’re looking for something from a reliable brand, get this Revlon product.

2. BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Rotating Hot Air Brush

Editor’s Rating: 3.75/5.0

BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Rotating Hot Air BrushView on Amazon

BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Rotating Hot Air Brush is another premium-quality device meant for women with longer hair. This is a modern rotating air brush that features all the functions that any discerning woman may need in today’s world.

The foremost of these is the two-way spinning 2-inch barrel that can rotates at the press of a button. The button, itself, is strategically placed on an ergonomically designed handle.

The device is based around the company’s special nano-titanium technology. The technology is useful in preventing overheating and ensuring that there are hot spots on the barrel. It also makes sure that heat transfer is stable.

The nano-titanium technology is accompanied by ionic technology that nullifies the problem of frizzy and flyaway hair. It helps by generating negative ions that prevent polarization from taking place in the hair. As a result, it can also deal with split hairs over time. Of course, if you don’t have any of these problems, you’ll just get shinier, more voluminous hair.

You’ll be able to pick from three different temperature settings on this device. You can use the ‘low’ setting if your hair is not very thick or damp, the ‘high’ setting if it is thick or very damp, and the ‘cool’ setting if you want to fix the style in place.

However, if you have extra-thick or coarse hair, you’ll have to be particularly careful while using this device. It tends to pull hair and this is most evident in ladies with thicker, coarser, and curlier hair.

This is probably because it doesn’t have enough power to deal with such types of hair. The device has a power rating of only 500 watts, which is definitely not enough for extra-thick hair.

While we recommend looking at more powerful rotating air brushes, it is possible to use this one on extra-thick hair too. You’ll just have to go slow and learn its proper use to avoid pulls.

Being gentle with this device has another benefit – longevity. If you treat it gently, the device will last a long time. As it is, its spinner is particularly prone to failing very early. Avoiding rough use, though, will extend its life.

This air brush is quite attractive in appearance, with its unique powder blue color. On the flip side, it is quite expensive. Also, it is designed exclusively for use in Canada and the US, since it only supports the 110V power systems.

Who’s it for: If you’re a gentle user of devices and want a feature-rich rotating air brush, get this BaByliss product.

3. INFINITIPRO BY CONAIR Spin Air Rotating Styler/Hot Air Brush (Best Budget)

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5.0

INFINITIPRO BY CONAIR Spin Air Rotating Styler/Hot Air BrushView on Amazon

This device is our pick in the premium section. It’s not only the most affordable in the premium market segment but also the most reliable.

Like most rotating air brushes, the INFINITIPRO by CONAIR has a 2-inch barrel specifically perfect for women with longer hair. It also has the latest technologies in the industry with its tourmaline and ceramic finish backed by the True Ion Generator.

The tourmaline ceramic finish ensures that heat remains uniform on the barrel without any hotspots and the True Ion Generator guarantees freedom from flyaway and frizzy hair. The negative ions also help counter split ends, of course.

Further, the barrel also boasts of antistatic bristles. Static while brushing hair can be very annoying, so we really like this addition. The device still tends to catch and pull hair, though. The hairs usually get stuck between the fixed plastic on the two sides of the rotating barrel.

Most rotating air brushes pull hair and this is mainly because users don’t have the required skills. As you learn to use these brushes properly, you’ll see fewer instances of hair pulling from them. The more you use this device, the better you’ll get with its temperature settings as well. There are three – low, high, and cool.

What sets this device apart from its competitors is its durability and reliability. This is one of the most reliable rotating air brushes out there. It is extremely long-lasting and doesn’t break down easily. Even the spinning function is steady and stays alive for a long time. Moreover, if you use the provided barrel cover while storing this device, you’ll extend its life even further.

The one area where this device falls behind a few of it’s competitors is power. It has an output rating of only 500 watts, which is alright for most users but now here close to what women with difficult hair really need. It also means that you can’t use this device on wet hair. You’ll only be able to use it on 80-90% dry hair.

The device is also a bit on the expensive side but not like most premium rotating air brushes. It also doesn’t support the European and Asian 220V power systems and can only be used in the US and Canada.

If you decide to buy this device, you’d be able to choose from two color options – black and ombre.

Who’s it for: This one from Conair will be perfect for those of you who want a reliable and durable rotating air brush.

4. NIKAI Multi-Function Automatic Rotating Style Hair Dryer

Editor’s Rating: 3.75/5.0

NIKAI Multi-Function Automatic Rotating Style Hair DryerView on Amazon

This isn’t just a rotating air brush. It is a multi-purpose haircare device that comes with four different attachments. One of these attachments is the rotating barrel and the reason why we’ve included this product in our guide of the best rotating air brushes.

Like most rotating air brushes, the barrel on this one rotates both ways and measures two inches across. As a result, this device is tailor-made for women with long hair. There is another thinner barrel attachment, but it doesn’t rotate like the thick one. According to the company, the thinner attachment is great for finishing off styling sessions.

While hugely helpful, both the barrels will catch and pull hair if you don’t learn how to use it properly. There is a steep learning curve here, but putting time into it is worth it. As you learn to use such devices, you’ll see that they pull hair less.

Further, both these barrels have boar bristles. In case you didn’t know, boar bristles are the gold standard in the hairbrush industry because they ensure the proper spreading of natural scalp oils from roots to tips.

Along with the two boar bristle barrels, you’ll get a volume diff user attachment and a dual straightening attachment as well. The diff user is good for drying hairs while the dual straightening head can be used to straighten them.

The device boasts of both, ceramic coating as well as ionic antistatic technology. The ceramic coating helps keep heat transfer uniform, while the ionic technology generates negative ions to counter frizzy and flyaway hair.

Like most air brushes, this one also has three heat settings including the cool setting. Further, it comes with a quality warranty that remains active for one year.

Even with all its qualities, this device isn’t without flaws. The biggest of these is its size. It is a bit too bulky, even for rotating air brushes. What makes things worse is that it is an extremely heavy device too. You’ll have trouble using it with just one hand since it weighs a hefty three pounds.

This rotating air brush is exclusively designed for the US and Canadian markets, which is why it only works on 110V power systems.

Who’s it for: If you want a multipurpose device with a rotating air brush attachment, get this one.

5. John Frieda Hot Air Spin Brush (Best Value)

Editor’s Rating: 4.0/5.0

John Frieda Hot Air Spin BrushView on Amazon

John Frieda’s static hot air brush has been a huge success from the moment it was launched. This product is its rotating counterpart and is equally good. It boasts of the same kind of manufacturing quality and functionality that made the older static model so popular.

This rotating air brush comes with two attachments. Both of them are rotating barrel brushes measuring 1.5 and two inches. This means that this device is as useful for women with longer hair as ladies with medium length hair.

Further, if you like to mix and match your curls, then this device was created just for you. You can use the thicker barrel for looser, bigger curls while the thinner one will be perfect for tighter, smaller curls.

However, this device isn’t all that great for women with difficult hair. When it comes to extra-coarse or extra-thick hair, your curling device needs to have a lot of power. This device, unfortunately, lacks in that department since it only has a power output rating of 500 watts.

Coming back to the positives, this device’s barrels boast of a combination of boar and nylon bristles. While boar bristles are excellent for maintaining hair, nylon bristles make the barrels more durable. However, the inclusion of nylon bristles also means that the brush generates too much static in the hair.

Additionally, the device boasts of both titanium ceramic technology and advanced ionic conditioning technology. Titanium ceramic coating on the barrels keeps them from overheating in any one spot while ionic conditioning helps keep frizzy and flyaway hair at bay. The device has the usual three temperature settings, i.e., low, high, and cool.

This rotating air brush has one big flaw. It is too heavy. Since it weighs 2.2 pounds, it can become difficult to manage over an extended period of time. This is true even though the 360-degree swivel cord will make it easier for you to manipulate this device around your head.

Who’s it for: If you’ve tried the static John Frieda and are now looking for more convenience along with versatility, get this product.

6. INFINITIPRO BY CONAIR Hot Air Spin Brush

Editor’s Rating: 3.75/5.0

INFINITIPRO BY CONAIR Hot Air Spin BrushView on Amazon

Brands like Revlon and CONAIR dominate the rotating air brush industry. They’re known for offering numerous products spanning multiple market segments. The Hot Air Spin Brush is CONAIR’s offering in the value segment.

The company offers this device in three different configurations. One comes with a 1.5-inch barrel, another with a 2-inch barrel, and the third one with both as detachable attachments. We’re reviewing the two-attachment version, but the majority of pros and cons remain relevant for the other two variants as well.

The two attachments make this device very versatile. They make it possible for multiple women in the house to share it. The different length barrels make this rotating air brush suitable for both, long and medium length hair.

They also make this device perfect for women who like to mix things up when it comes to their curls. If you’re such a lady, then you’ve already realized that you can use the thinner brush for tight and small curls and the thicker one for loose and large curls.

Even though it is incredibly versatile, you may want to pass on this device if you have extra-thick or extra-course hair. Such hair types require a lot of power and this device can only deliver 500 watts. It does boast of tourmaline ceramic coating, though. This advanced technology prevents overheating and keeps heat uniform all over the barrels.

The barrels also combine nylon and boar bristles with anti-static technology. These bristles, though, aren’t very strong. They not only bend easily but also break away when bent too far.

This would’ve made it particularly challenging to travel with this device if the manufacturer hadn’t provided covers for both barrels. Even though the bristles bend and break easily, they still somehow manage to catch and pull hair. More experienced users of this device, though, report that pulled hair isn’t a problem if you learn to use it properly.

It offers the usual three temperature settings including the cool setting. However, the controlling buttons are poorly placed on the handle. They’re located in a place where they keep getting in the way of the grip. This results in unwanted changes in the settings.

Another usability problem is the short cord, which can prevent freedom of movement. Further, the device is also on the heavier side. It is heavier than most air brushes and may be difficult to handle for many women.

It is also not a dual voltage air brush. You can neither use it in Europe nor Asia.

Who’s it for: If you want multiple options while purchasing a product, get this one from CONAIR.

7. TRU BEAUTY Rotating Hot Air Brush – B07HKPHCBZ (Top Pick)

Editor’s Rating: 4.25/5.0

TRU BEAUTY Rotating Hot Air Brush - B07HKPHCBZView on Amazon

This is a relatively new product from TRU BEAUTY that has only become available recently. However, in the little time that it has been around, it has received some great reviews from its users.

This rotating air brush is intended for women with long length hair since its barrel measures two inches across. The barrel spins in both directions, has a ceramic coating, and boasts of nano-titanium technology.

This combination is the latest and ensures temperature stability all over the barrel. It prevents any hotspots and the heat transfer remains consistent also. This air brush is also quite powerful, with a power output rating of 900 watts.

Further, this device has three heat settings including the cold shot. It even comes in two different colors, which are pearlized black and pearlized blush. If you like your hairstyling equipment attractive, you’ll definitely want the pearlized blush model. It is quite pretty to have and hold.

There isn’t a lot wrong with this product either. The biggest concern is that it is a bit too big and bulky. As a result, it can be quite difficult to move it around the head for an extended period.

There’s also a chance that you’ll experience some pulling, especially if you’re new to using rotating air brushes. Don’t worry, though. As you get more experience with the device, it will stop catching hair so much.

This device isn’t for globetrotters. If you travel to Europe and Asia a lot, you may want to pick a dual voltage device. This one can only work with 110V power systems.

Incidentally, if you were wondering, the company is confident in the quality of its product and offers a 100% money-back guarantee!

8. JOYYUM 2-in-1 Hot Air Spin Brush

Editor’s Rating: 3.75/5.0

JOYYUM 2-in-1 Hot Air Spin BrushView on Amazon

The JOYYUM 2-in-1 Hot Air Spin Brush is the most powerful in this guide, and indeed, one of the most powerful rotating air brushes in the market. It has a power output rating of 1000 watts which should be enough to untangle even the coarsest and thickest hair types.

However, its power is only relevant when it comes to the strength and temperature of the blown air. It isn’t pertinent to the spinning motor. What this means in practice is that, while this device blows hot air with power, it doesn’t spin so well when loaded with hair.

In fact, it’s rotation is annoyingly slow. Therefore, when you’re curling your hair with it, you may find yourself taking more time.

At the same time, the company did try to make this device as versatile as possible. It comes with two detachable barrel brush heads. One measures 1.5 inches wide, while the other spans two inches across

The thicker barrel attachment creates loose, wavy, large, and voluminous curls while the thinner one delivers small, bouncy, tight, and natural curls. The smaller barrel is also most suitable for women with medium length hair while the larger one is more appropriate for women with long length hair.

The bristles on the barrel are antistatic and designed to neutralize frizz and flyaway hair. The company says this device generates more concentrated ions than other similar products in the market owing to its tourmaline ceramic technology, but we feel that is only marketing.

With respect to heat settings, you’ll have three to play with including the cold shot. In terms of appearance, this is a fairly attractive device largely because of its rose gold color.

This rotating air brush isn’t the easiest to use, though. There are two reasons for this. The first is its bulk. It is big and can be difficult to manage for many women. The second is its short cord. Its cord only measures 5.9 feet.

Some positives do counter these negatives when it comes to usability. For one, this device only weighs 1.4 pounds. Therefore, its bulkiness is balanced by its lightness. Another great quality is the 360-degree swivel cord.

We should also add that this rotating air brush isn’t a dual voltage device. It can only run on 110V and if you want to use it in Europe or Asia, you’ll have to get a good voltage converter.

The device is protected by a one-year warranty.

Who’s it for: If you value heating and blower power more than spinning power in your rotating air brush, get this device.

9. SHINON AutoRotating Hot Air Brush

Editor’s Rating: 3.75/5.0

SHINON AutoRotating Hot Air BrushView on Amazon

Shinon is a Japanese company that is known for its electronic products. Its Auto Rotating Hot Air Brush is, basically, Japanese technology modified specifically for the US and Canadian markets.

This rotating air brush is a good budget option especially for women with medium length hair, but it can be used by women with long length hair too. While women with medium length hair will find this device exactly what they need, it is only suitable for women with long hair if they’re looking for tighter, bouncier curls.

This device is built around tourmaline ceramic technology, which does two things. It ensures that heat generated is stable and that there are no hotspots. This is especially useful with high-powered air brushes like this one. This device has a power output rating of 800 watts. While this isn’t the highest ever, it is still on the higher side.

The surprising bit here is that despite that power output, this device is still quite light, weighing in at only about 1.4 pounds. Its light weight makes it very easy to manipulate around the head.

Another feature that makes this device easy to use it the 360-degree swivel cord. We should also mention that this air brush has three temperature settings which are low, high, and cold.

While good, this device isn’t exceptional simply because it has too many significant flaws. The first of these is that it breaks down too soon. Most of its users complain that it breaks down within a couple of months.

Further, while it is functional, it pulls hair by catching them between the rotating section and the static sections. The rotation function, itself, is quite annoying. You need to keep the button pressed to keep the rotation function on and there is no way to fix the button in the ‘on’ position.

We understand that this is the norm in Japan, but it can be annoying for ladies in the US and Canada who are used to fixed buttons. Finally, like most US and Canada specific air brushes, this one isn’t dual voltage either.

Who’s it for: If you want an affordable option and have medium length hair, get this Japanese device.

10. TRU BEAUTY Rotating Hot Air Brush – B07HKPPCGY

Editor’s Rating: 4.0/5.0

TRU BEAUTY Rotating Hot Air Brush - B07HKPPCGYView on Amazon

This is the second TRU BEAUTY product that we’re reviewing in this guide. The company seems to be making a big splash in the rotating air brushes market off late as this model is also new.

While the one we reviewed earlier was great for women with long length hair, this one is perfect for women with medium length hair. Alternatively, if you have long hair and need a device to create tighter curls, then you can choose to go for this one too.

This air rotating brush boasts of a 1.5-inch barrel that is built with nano-titanium technology. The ceramic coated barrel is good at maintaining temperature stability while being quick and reliable with heat conduction.

This is a powerful device too. As a result, it can handle the thickest, coarsest, and curliest hair with ease. With a power output rating of 1000 watts, it is the most powerful in this guide and should have no problems coping with difficult hair types.

There are three settings that you’ll be able to play with, in the form of low, high, and cold. The device also boasts of a 360-degree swivel cord that will keep the wire from getting tangled while the device will keep your hair from getting tangled. Also, the cord is six feet long, which is neither too long nor too short.

The primary problem with this device is that it pulls hair. However, this problem persists in all rotating air brushes mainly because it is related to the technique of the users. If you can give yourself time to learn how to use a rotating air brush properly, pulled hairs should stop being a problem for you.

One flaw that you won’t be able to do anything about is that this isn’t a dual voltage device. This means that even though its weight and size make it a travel-friendly device, you won’t be able to take it abroad with you. The only way you can do that would be to invest in a good voltage converter.

Who’s it for: If you have medium length hair and want the latest budget rotating air brush, then get this one from TRU BEAUTY.
