9 Best Face Waxes of 2019

9 Best Face Waxes of 2019

July 17, 2019 by Hazel Lake

When you are just over shaving, plucking, or whatever hair removal method you usually use to remove facial hair a great option is face waxing. Waxing as a whole has grown in popularity in recent years. Facial waxing for men is still a fairly new deal since men’s facial hair is significantly different than that of women. This can make it very hard to find a good wax that is safe to you for facial hair removal.

We’ve put together this guide to make it easy for you to compare the best options in face wax. We scoured through the waxes on the market to find the ones that are not only safe to use on the face but effective for removing the thicker, coarser facial hair that most men have. Whether you are wanting to sculpt and define your mustache, beard, or eyebrows or have decided to go for the silky smooth full face wax (except eyebrows… don’t completely remove your eyebrows), you are sure to find the right face wax for you among the following products.

Buying Guide

How did we decide on these Best Face Waxes? There are many types of wax available, however very few have been specifically marketed to be used for removing male facial hair. So, we had to do some digging to determine the best face waxes that men can use to achieve the best possible results. Here are a few of the criteria that we consider in making our selections.

Safe for Removing Facial Hair: Not all waxes are created equal. Waxes can contain many harsh ingredients that could irritate the more delicate skin on the face and neck. It is crucial that whatever wax you choose has been found safe for facial hair removal. This will help to ensure a lower risk of side effects associated with waxing in general, that may be more likely with facial waxing.

Removes Thicker/Coarse Hair: It is common for male facial hair to be significantly thicker and coarser than that of females. Even waxes designed to shape eyebrows may not be strong enough to tackle the beard or mustache hair of some men. Therefore, we made sure that waxes we chose could handle thick/coarse hair, if possible.

Type of Wax: There are several types of wax, and though they all will produce very similar results, the biggest difference is going to be found in the waxing process. Here are the common types of wax that we’ve included in this guide, and how they may be different.

Hard Wax – Hard wax is commonly used for precision hair removal since it requires no strips or other removal materials. Hard wax is a great option for removing hair from more sensitive areas including the face. The wax is melted, applied directly to the skin and allowed to cool. As the wax cools it stiffens and traps the hair in the hard wax. Then the wax is quickly removed taking the hair with it.

Most people seem to find using hard wax less painful and more effective. And since the wax only adheres to the hair you can wax the area again if you need to remove more hairs without worrying about excess skin irritation.

Soft Wax – Soft wax, also known as strip wax, is a wax that is more fluid at room temperature, so requires no warming to use. The wax is applied in a thin layer to the area and then a strip of material, usually a muslin or cotton mesh, is pressed into the wax. The entire strip is then pulled away removing the hair.

Soft wax is used to remove thinner or fine hair, and in areas that have more contours. Since the wax does stick to the skin there is a greater risk of irritation and you should not reapply it to get any stray hairs.

Sugar Wax – Sugar wax is the most natural form of wax, made from a simple combination of water, sugar, and usually an acid like lemon. Sugar wax is used and applied in the same way as hard wax and will have very similar results.

The biggest difference is that sugar wax requires hair to be a bit longer, about ¼ , than hard wax. Sugar wax is great for thick or coarse hair but does not adhere well to short or fine hairs.

Please note that this is not every type of wax available, just the ones most effective for male face waxing.

Ingredients: Another important component of face wax is the quality of the ingredients. Since the skin on the face is more sensitive to harsh chemicals and abrasives it is important to use a wax that contains only the highest quality ingredients. The best waxes will contain only all-natural and organic ingredients to offer the highest protection for the delicate skin on the face.

Effectiveness: What good would any product be if it did not do the job? That is why every wax on this list was examined for overall effectiveness. We also considered the experience of previous customers to help determine the effectiveness of many different skin and hair types.

Tips for Facial Waxing:

Plan Ahead: You shouldn’t just wake up one morning and decide to wax your face. There is some planning that must be done to ensure that you achieve the best possible results.

  • Suggested growth for waxing – Most wax manufacturers will suggest that you allow your hair to be between one quarter and one half of an inch for the wax to completely adhered to the hair. This will result in better overall hair removal less need for reapplication.
  • Stop peels, exfoliation a week before – If you use any type of citrus or chemical peel or exfoliators, you should stop using them approximately one week before you plan to wax your face. This will reduce the amount of skin irritation inflammation and risk of damaging hair follicles.
  • Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize – It is extremely important both before and after waxing to moisturize your skin thoroughly. This will help to hydrate your skin, reduce the amount of irritation, and help the skin to recover from the waxing process. Additionally, moisturized skin results in softer skin. When your skin is softer waxing will likely be significantly less painful.
  • Stay out of the sun – It is really important to stay out of the sun for approximately 1 or 2 weeks prior to waxing. Sun exposure increases the risk of UV damage to the skin and damaged skin is not a good candidate for waxing. You should also avoid alternative sun tanning methods such as tanning beds and self-tanners.

Follow the Directions: Every type of wax will have its own specific directions on how to melt the wax, how to apply the wax, and how to remove the wax. It is extremely important that you follow all manufacturer’s directions for the wax that you choose in order to avoid any unnecessary skin irritation or damage, and allow you to achieve the best possible result.

When to Avoid Waxing: In addition to the things mentioned above that you should do prior to waxing, you should also avoid waxing if you use any of the following products.

  • Blood Thinners – Waxing can increase the blood flow to the skin and surrounding area. There is also always a chance that the skin could be irritated enough to bleed. These risks are significantly higher for individuals that use blood thinners for medical conditions.
  • Medications for acne – Medications for acne often include highly acidic ingredients. These ingredients make the skin on the face extremely sensitive to irritation and damage. Therefore, should not wax while using the medication and wait for to wax for 4 to 6 weeks after you stop using the medication.
  • Medicated face creams – Though not usually prescription strength medicated face creams also contain ingredients that can increase skin sensitivity. Avoid waxing while using these types of creams.

When to Wax: When waxing you will achieve the best results if you allow your hair to be between ¼ and ½ of an inch; when it has been at least 2 weeks since you shaved, and when your skin is dry. Some individuals claim they are able to achieve better results when they wax in the evening rather than in the morning. This is likely due to the tendency for skin cells to swell slightly overnight.

You should also wax at least 3 or 4 days prior to any event. This will allow the skin to completely recover from the waxing.

Know the Risks: Waxing is not without some risks and it is important to consider your personal risks as well as the most common risks.

Individuals with sensitive skin may not want to use soft waxes as they can be more abrasive to the skin and even cause significant damage if the wax sticks to the skin.

Waxing with a hard or sugar wax that must be melted means that there is a risk of burning your skin. Take all necessary precautions and fully test the temperature of the wax before applying it to your skin. This is extremely important with waxes that are melted in the microwave. For safer melting, use a wax melting pot.

Conclusion

There you go, everything you need to know to pick the best face wax. We hope that this guide has answered any questions you may have had regarding facial waxing. In some cases, the only way to know if the wax is truly right for you is to try it and see. For most of the waxes on this list, there is some kind of guarantee that will allow you to return the item if it does not meet your expectations. Now it’s time to get waxin!
