How Should You Choose A Curling Iron for Fine Hair?

Fine hair is delicate. Heat can damage it severely. Therefore, when choosing a curling iron for fine hair, your primary concern needs to be reducing potential heat damage. This means paying attention to the lowest temperature of the curling iron and the technologies it uses.

The structure of fine hair is also different from other types of hair. Therefore, you’ll need to consider the thickness of the barrel while making a choice too. There are a few other general variables that we recommend looking into before buying a curling iron too. Consider.

Heat Settings

If you had any other type of hair, we would tell you to look at the temperature range offered by curling irons. However, since we’re focusing exclusively on fine hair, the lower end of that temperature is more important than its upper end.

Fine hair should usually not be exposed to more than 300 degrees Fahrenheit. However, if you can get curls at even lower temperatures, then it will be better for your hair.

Therefore, you should always try to get curling irons with the lowest temperature settings. The lowest temperature setting amongst our reviewed curling irons is 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Further, the curling iron with the highest “lowest temperature” can operate at 290 degrees Fahrenheit.

Materials and Technology

The barrel material and the technologies behind it can also protect fine hair in various ways.

For example, the simplest barrel material amongst our reviewed curling irons is ceramic. Ceramic is the absolute minimum you should accept when considering a curling iron for your fine hair.

Ceramic is beneficial for fine hair because it ensures even distribution of heat. Ceramic barrels also generate negatively charged ions. These negative ions help counter the problem of frizzy and flyaway hair.

All good curling irons will boast of ceramic barrels, but the really good ones will have ceramic paired with some other material such as pearl or tourmaline. These additions can stabilize ceramic further and cause even more negative ion generation.

A few curling irons have barrels coated or made up of alternative materials such as gold or nano titanium. Gold is good because it can improve the shine of the hair. Titanium is an extremely lightweight, stable material that heats up and cools down quickly while maintaining even heat destruction.

Also, you may want to favor curling irons with infrared technology. Infrared heat is less damaging to hair than conventional methods of heat generation.

Barrel Size

The barrel size of your chosen curling iron should reflect two things – the fineness of your hair and its length. Generally, one-inch barrels should be good enough for most fine-haired women. However, if your hair barely qualifies as fine, then you may want to consider slightly thicker barrels such as 1.25 inches or even 1.5 inches.

You should also consider thicker and longer barrels if your hair is very long. It can be difficult to fit long hair on thin and short barrels, regardless of whether they’re fine or coarse.

Other Variables

A few features can make a huge difference in how easy or difficult it is to use a curling iron. Getting curling irons with these features can even save you a lot of time.

  • Weight: Since you’ll be holding and managing the curling iron with just one hand, we suggest favoring lightweight devices over others. Heavier curling irons will make longer curling sessions difficult and more tiring.
  • Cool tip: Traditionally, curling iron barrels have cool-touch tips. These tips make life easy because you can hold the device from both ends. However, newer models don’t offer this feature. Only pick these models if you have some experience curling your hair.
  • Swivel cord: Swivel cord doesn’t tangle as you move the curling iron around your head. Ideally, you should go for products with this feature. Also, ensure that the cord is long to avoid being restricted by the distance of your socket.
  • Barrel shape: Some curling irons have oval or conical barrels. These barrel shapes ensure more natural looking curls. However, some of you may prefer more defined curls. If you’re one such woman, pick a round-barreled device.
  • Heating time: The quicker your curling iron heats up, the more time you’ll save.
  • Auto shutoff: This is a safety feature. If you’re the forgetful kind, you may want to ensure that your curling iron has this feature.
  • Dual voltage: If you travel all over the world and want to take your curling iron with you, make sure that the device supports worldwide voltage.
  • Accessories: Accessories such as a travel case, a heat-resistant glove, and even a heat-resistant mat can be very useful. At the very least, make sure that you get a glove.

3 Best Budget Curling Irons for Fine Hair: Detailed Reviews

1. Anjou Curling Iron with Tourmaline Ceramic Coating

Editor’s Rating: 4.25/5.0

Anjou Curling Iron with Tourmaline Ceramic CoatingView on Amazon

You don’t expect budget devices to have a lot of features, but this curling iron from Anjou is different. This device isn’t only priced competitively, but it offers far more features than you would expect at such a low price. Some of its features even make it stand out from the crowd.

Take its length for example. This curling iron is known for its extra-long barrel, making it ideal for women with long hair. Its barrel is more than six inches long! Anjou even offers multiple thickness options.

You can choose from one-inch, 1.25-inch, and 1.5-inch barrels. Apart from barrel width variations, this curling iron also offers color options. You can choose from two – gold and gradient (multicolor).

There’s more than a single reason why this curling iron is so good for fine-haired women. The main one is its lowest temperature. You can use this curling iron at as low as 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

At such low temperatures, even women with heavily damaged hair will be able to use this curling iron, especially since the barrel boasts of tourmaline ceramic technology.

This curling iron also heats up pretty quickly, needing only about a minute to reach its maximum temperature of 410 degrees Fahrenheit.

This device rates high in user-friendliness as well. It boasts of several features included solely to make your life easier. For instance, there is an auto shutoff feature that turns the device off if it is idle for more than 30 minutes.

Similarly, the curling iron incorporates a thermally insulated stainless-steel stand. As a result, once you’re done curling your hair, you can just lay it down on any surface. Further, it comes with an eight-feet long 360-degree swivel cord which will prevent the cord from tangling.

This device is also very travel-friendly. It is lightweight and can handle 220V power systems as well as the 110V prevalent in the US. It also carries with a 12-month warranty.

The company has even provided a spare curling clip and a heat-resistant glove with the curling iron. You should be prepared to use the glove or you’ll risk burning your fingers because this device’s cool-touch tip is too short to be of any use.

Two other flaws stand out as well. The first is that, like the cool-touch tip, the clamp thumb lever is too short. Moreover, it tends to get too hot to touch. Also, the control buttons on the handle can get in the way of your grip.

Who’s it for: If you want an extra-long barrel on your curling iron at an affordable price, get this Anjun device.

2. Remington Pro Curling Wand with Pearl Ceramic Technology

Editor’s Rating: 4.0/5.0

Remington Pro Curling Wand with Pearl Ceramic TechnologyView on Amazon

Remington is one of the most recognizable names when it comes to hair care equipment. Most of their hot tools boast of the unique pearl ceramic technology and this curling wand is no different.

Pearl ceramic technology does two things. The first is that it keeps heat distribution even all across and the other is that it generates negative ions. Event heat prevents heat damage, while negative ions counter frizz and flyaway hair.

Unlike many other devices from Remington and even most curling irons in the market, this one is very light. In fact, this is the lightest curling iron we’ve come across in all the time we’ve spent in this industry. It weighs a mere half a pound!

The barrel of the wand is thick towards the handle and tapers towards the tip. This ensures that the curls it creates are more casual and natural-looking. While this will appeal to most women, we understand that some of you may want more defined curls.

Remington offers this device with barrels of two different dimensions. One measures 1 to 1.5 inches, while the other one measures 0.5 to 1 inch. If you have short, fine hair, the thinner one will be more suitable for you.

The controls and temperature display on this device are digital. Its lowest temperature is 266 degrees Fahrenheit, while its highest is 410 degrees Fahrenheit. It is quick to heat up too, taking only 30 seconds.

In terms of safety features, this device has a 60-minute auto shutoff feature and comes with a heat protective glove. However, the glove is of poor quality and doesn’t do much protecting. It is too thin to handle the kind of temperatures this wand can reach, especially since the device’s handle can also get too hot.

This device also has a swivel cord. The cord, unfortunately, is a bit too short. It measures only six feet in length. However, the device is quite affordable and is even backed by a two-year limited warranty.

We should also specify that this isn’t a dual voltage device.

Who’s it for: If you want a really light hair curler within your budget, get this wand from Remington.

3. Xtava It Curl Curling Wand Professional Hair Wand with Ceramic Barrel (Best Budget)

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5.0

Xtava It Curl Curling Wand Professional Hair Wand with Ceramic BarrelView on Amazon

This device is our pick as the best budget hair curler. This curling wand has loads of features and qualities and barely any flaws. The most special aspect of this device, however, is its tapering, oval-shaped barrel.

The oval or cylindrical shape allows this wand to create curls that look very natural. However, loose, less defined curls may not appeal to some, depending on their personal preferences.

So, if you prefer your curls to be well-defined, you may not want to go for this device. On the other hand, if you don’t have such preferences, then this is easily the best curling wand you can get.

It even has two variants. One has a barrel that measures 0.75 to 1.25 inches and the other’s barrel spans one to 1.5 inches. Both of them have a cool-touch tip. Further, each of them comes with a heat-resistant glove and travel case.

The barrels have a ceramic tourmaline coating along with ionic technology. As a result, the heat remains constant all over their surface and the device even generates negative ions to combat flyaway and frizzy hair.

The device has 22 heat settings with the lowest being 200 degrees Fahrenheit and the highest 410 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat settings are controlled with digital buttons and displayed on an LCD screen. There’s even a temperature lock feature, which is quite rare in curling wands and irons.

Like most high-quality curling wands, this one heats up quickly and boasts of an automatic shutoff feature too. The automatic shutoff kicks in after 60 minutes of inactivity.

This curling wand does well in usability too. It has a 360-degrees swivel cord that is nearly nine feet long and can be used in 110 or 220V power systems. Further, the device is backed by a two-year warranty and even a money-back guarantee. This is particularly surprising because affordably priced devices don’t tend to have such wide-ranging support from their manufacturers.

The biggest problem with this curling wand is that it is difficult to master. Curling wands, generally, are difficult to master so this is nothing new though. Another flaw is that this device is a little on the fragile side. If you don’t use it gently, you may see it break down in only a few months.

Who’s it for: If you want the most features for the least amount of money, get this Xtava curling wand.

3 Best Value Curling Irons for Fine Hair: Detailed Reviews

4. Xtava 5 in 1 Professional Curling Iron and Wand Set (Top Pick)

Editor’s Rating: 4.75/5.0

Xtava 5 in 1 Professional Curling Iron and Wand SetView on Amazon

The Xtava curling wand was our pick of all budget curlers, but it isn’t even the best device offered by Xtava. Their best offering is this 5 in 1 professional curling iron and wand set. As a result, this set happens to be our top pick of all the curling irons and wands available in the market right now. It is just that good.

The kind of value for money this device offers is unparalleled. It has virtually everything you’ll ever want from your curling iron and then some. It is so good that it trumps premium-priced curling irons.

As its name suggests, this is a curling iron and wand set. It comes with five detachable barrels and between them, they cover every curling need you’ll ever have. Of the five, two are wands and three are irons.

Further, some barrels come with clamps while others don’t. The barrels with clamps measure 1.25 inches, one inch, and 0.7 to one inch. The clamp-less barrels span 0.7 to one inch and 0.3 to 0.75 inches. The attachments are this set’s biggest strength, but they’re also responsible for a couple of its flaws. However, these flaws are negligible.

The first of these flaws is that the attachments are very tight and difficult to take off and the other is that you have to wait for them to cool before you can even try to take them off. Therefore, if you want to use more than a single attachment in one session, you need to have a lot of time to spare.

This device is built around tourmaline ceramic technology. As a result, it doesn’t only keep heat distributed evenly but also generates enough negative ions to deal with frizzy hair.

The lowest temperature of this curling set is ideal for fine hair. It can operate between 250 degrees Fahrenheit and 410 degrees Fahrenheit. The range is divided into nine precise temperature settings.

This set is easy to use and has multiple features designed to make users’ lives easier. For instance, this device won’t be a safety issue for forgetful people as it has a 60-minute auto shutoff feature.

Further, it has an eight-feet long 360-degrees swivel cord. However, surprisingly, its barrels don’t have cool-touch tips. All barrels are without these tips which can make them very difficult to use for inexperienced people.Luckily, it comes with an effective heat protective glove to keep your fingers from getting burnt.

It even includes a zip travel case. However, the device isn’t very travel-friendly mainly because of its weight. Weighing nearly three pounds, this is one of the heaviest curling irons you’ll find anywhere.

That weight, however, makes this set quite reliable, which is reflected in how its manufacturer has decided to back it. It has a backing of a two-year warranty and a money-back guarantee.

Who’s it for: If you love curls of all types, then get this superb, budget-friendly device from Xtava.

5. BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Spring Curling Iron

Editor’s Rating: 3.75/5.0

BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Spring Curling IronView on Amazon

This curling iron from BaBylissPRO made it to our list for one reason – its Sol-Gel technology. This technology is almost tailor-made for fine-haired women. The purpose of this technology, according to the company, makes the barrel “37% stronger and 22% smoother”.

While the strength it brings matters, we like the “smoother” bit more because it prevents hair from being caught and pulled. Since fine hair is very delicate, any pulling can result in breakage and since this curling iron doesn’t pull hair, it breaks hair less.

Another benefit of this technology is that it keeps the iron from denting the hair. However, you should only get this device if you have short, fine hair. It has a fairly short barrel that may not be enough for long, fine-haired women.

This curling iron is also good for fine hair because it can be used on as low as 250 degrees Fahrenheit. While you’ll want to stick to the lower settings to protect your fine hair, the device boasts a total of 50 settings with the maximum one for 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Further, it heats up quickly, especially if you use the “turbo” button.

Another reason why this device suits fine hair is that it utilizes infrared technology to curl hair. As you may already know, infrared technology keeps heat damage to a minimum.

The barrel on this device is made up of nano titanium which keeps the heat evenly spread. The fact that the barrel is made up of titanium brings two other benefits. The first is that it allows the barrel to heat up very quickly and the other is that it makes this curling iron very light.

BaBylissPRO offers this device with four barrel-widths. These include 0.75 inches, one inch, 1.25 inches, and 1.5 inches. Each variant will also have an eight-feet long tangle-free cord, but none of them will come with a carrying case. The device is fairly priced, even though we wouldn’t put it in the budget price bracket.

While its biggest flaw maybe its short barrel, there are a few other potential problems you need to consider before you get this device. The first is that it doesn’t offer an auto shutoff feature.

Another is that the included cool-touch tip is short and tapers in a way that it is very tough to grip. Even the clamp on this device is problematic since it doesn’t hold the hair in place.

Who’s it for: If you have short, fine hair and are looking for an infrared curling iron, get this device.

6. HOT TOOLS Professional 24k Gold Curling Iron

Editor’s Rating: 4.0/5.0

HOT TOOLS Professional 24k Gold Curling IronView on Amazon

When it comes to variety and novelty, you can’t beat this curling iron from Hot Tools. This is easily the device with the maximum number of variants in the market. It is available in seven different barrel-widths and two different barrellengths.

The widths you’ll get to choose from include 0.37 inches, 0.5 inches, 0.62 inches, 1 inch, 1.25 inches, 1.5 inches, and 2 inches. In terms of length, you get the standard and the extra-long variants. Choose the longer and thicker barrels, if you have long, fine hair.

This device stands out even when it comes to novelty because of two reasons – its Pulse technology and its 24k gold plating.

The Pulse technology is unique to Hot Tools products. Its primary function is to monitor the barrel temperature and make corrections if it goes too high or too low. The 24k gold plating is useful too. It adds extra shine and vibrancy to curls.

The device heats up quickly to whatever temperature you choose. You’ll have endless heat settings to pick from because this device offers variable settings between 280 degrees Fahrenheit and 430 degrees Fahrenheit.

There’s a separate on-off switch along with an “on” indicator light. The indicator’s light, however, is orange and it is quite difficult to tell when it is on.This device even comes with a foldaway safety stand and has a one-year warranty backing it. Unfortunately, there’s no automatic shutoff feature on this device.

Further, this curling iron has an eight-feet long swivel cord and a soft-touch handle that ensures a comfortable grip. However, the buttons are placed on the handle in a way that they get in the way of the grip.

All these features are available at a very competitive price too. However, like many curling irons, it has is flaws. The biggest is its clamp. The clamp on this curling iron is incredibly tight. It grips hair so tightly that it invariably leaves behind a dent on it.

Further, the curling iron is also a bit on the heavier side which can take a toll on your wrist over time.

Who’s it for: If you’re looking for a “different” or “unique” curling iron, get this one from Hot Tools.

3 Best Premium Curling Irons for Fine Hair: Detailed Reviews

7. PARWIN PRO 7 in 1 Curling Iron Wand Set

Editor’s Rating: 4.25/5.0

PARWIN PRO 7 in 1 Curling Iron Wand SetView on Amazon

This is probably the largest and most versatile hair curling set in the market right now. It comes with seven different attachments including cylindrical, conical, and bubble barrels. The smallest cylindrical and conical barrels even taper to create natural looking curls.

Its cylindrical barrels measure 1.25 inches, 0.95 inches, and 0.5 to 0.98 inches. Its conical barrels measure 0.75 inches, 0.5 inches, and 0.35 to 0.7 inches. The bubble barrel measures 0.75 inches in thickness. Like every curling set out there, though, you’ll have to wait for the barrels to cool before you can change them up.

Between these multiple types of barrels, you’ll be able to create everything from large, loose, and voluminous curls to highly defined and spiraling curls. However, variety and versatility aren’t the only things this product offers.

It offers protection for fine hair and convenience too. Each of its barrels has a ceramic tourmaline coating which generates negative ions to deal with frizzy hair. This device’s lowest temperature is especially useful for fine hair since it can operate on as low as 170 degrees Fahrenheit, with the maximum being 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Further, its temperature control and display are digital with the screen being particularly fancy. It changes color from blue to green when the chosen temperature is reached and the device is ready to be used. The control panel, however, is located in a way that you end up pressing it by mistake while gripping the handle.

For convenience, the device has a 60-minute automatic shutoff feature and an eight-feet long 360-degree swivel cord. It even comes with a heat-resistant glove and travel case.

You will be using the glove a lot since none of the barrels have cool-touch tips.On the flipside, you won’t be using the travel case much because the device is very heavy. If you do choose to travel with this device, though, you can benefit from its worldwide voltage support.

For a premium product, this set’s price isn’t all that high, especially since it comes with a one-year warranty and a money-back guarantee. You’ll be able to choose from two variants – professional and standard. We suggest the professional variant since it heats faster, lasts longer, and even produces curls that stay longer.

Who’s it for: If you want maximum versatility and don’t plan on curling hair much while traveling, get this Parwinset.

This is the second curling set that we’ve included in our premium section. It is definitely an expensive device, but the fact that it comes with five detachable barrels justifies that cost to an extent.

Two of the five barrels in this set are tapering while the other three have a uniform width. The tapering barrels measure 0.35 to 0.70 inches and 0.70 to 0.98 inches, while the uniform barrels measure 0.75 inches, 0.98 inches, and 1.25 inches.

The attachments, as is natural, can be tough to change when hot. On the other hand, if you use the provided heat-resistant glove, you won’t have to wait as long to switch from one attachment to another.

At the same time, the rest you’ll get with the wait would be a good idea because this device is incredibly heavy and we doubt you’ll be able to use it for a long time without taking a break.

Its weight also means that this device isn’t exactly travel-friendly, even though it supports 220V along with 110V power systems. Each barrel also boasts of tourmaline crystals injected into its structure.

The tourmaline crystals are useful when it comes to frizzy and flyaway hair. Additionally, this device is based around far-infrared technology. This technology is healthier for hair than traditional methods of delivering heat.

It also means that you can use the curling iron at higher temperatures, even for fine hair. This curling iron set also has the widest temperature range we’ve come across till now. Its lowest temperature level is 122 degrees Fahrenheit, while the maximum it can go is 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

There is, of course, an on-off switch and an LED indicator too. However, the control buttons on this device are a bit too hard. Sometimes, you may even have to press them more than once to get the device to respond. We should also mention that there is no automatic shutoff feature so you can’t leave this curling iron lying around while it is on.

The biggest problem with this curling iron set is that it doesn’t offer value for money. It is a very expensive device, but its build quality doesn’t reflect its cost. Even the one-year warranty you’ll get with it may not be enough to justify its high price.

Who’s it for: If money is not a concern and you want to curl your hair at the lowest temperatures possible, get this curling set.

9. The Beachwaver Co. S1 Curling Iron (Best Value)

Editor’s Rating: 4.25/5.0

The Beachwaver Co. S1 Curling IronView on Amazon

What if you could curl your fine hair at home without having to twirl your wrists a million times? This curling iron from The Beachwaver makes it possible with its rotating barrel.

The barrel on this curling iron rotates both ways with the press of a button. As a result, all you need to do is hold the tip of your hair section at one end and let the barrel roll inwards. You’ll even be able to choose the speed of the barrel’s rotation.

Once the wrap is complete, you can pull the barrel out of the section and you’ll have gorgeous, long-lasting curls to go. Before starting on the next hair section, you can press the home button to return the barrel to its starting position.

The barrel is one inch wide which means that the curls will be tight. It is a ceramic barrel which means that heat distribution will be even and frizzy and flyaway hair nonexistent. The barrel heats up quickly too, taking only about 30 seconds.

Apart from the ceramic barrel, this device’s lowest temperature makes it ideal for fine-haired women. It can operate at anything between 290 degrees Fahrenheit and 410 degrees Fahrenheit.

Several features have been incorporated into this device’s design to make your life easier. For instance, there is a temperature lock that will prevent you from changing the temperatures unwittingly as you grip the handle.

There’s also an automatic shutoff feature that turns the device off after 30 minutes, in case you leave the curling iron turned on. Further, there’s even an eight-feet long swivel cord designed to make operating this device easy.

On the flip side, the clamp on the barrel is very short and may make things difficult for inexperienced users. Also, this isn’t a dual voltage curling iron so you can’t take it abroad with you.

The biggest flaw of this device is its cost. It is unbelievably expensive and you may even have to break the bankto get all these features. The cost is especially problematic because this isn’t the sturdiest, most durable device. If not treated carefully, it breaks down within a few months.

Who’s it for: If you’re looking for comfort while curling your hair, get this rotating curling iron from The Beachwaver.
