Buying Guide

How did we come to these Mustache Waxes? There are many types of mustaches waxes available and choosing between them may be quite difficult. We compared waxes of all types on the following criteria and coupled that with our own experience and other customer reviews to choose the best mustache waxes.

Ingredients:

  • Beeswax is the primary ingredient in a mustache wax. It provides the holding power of the wax, as well as a solid base for other ingredients that are added, including carrier oil, butters, and even essential oils. The ratio of beeswax to other ingredients will determine the amount of hold a wax provides.
  • Carrier Oils are added to beeswax to make them less solid and easier to use. These oils are used to help distribute all ingredients completely throughout the beeswax for smoother wax. Some carrier oils will also have additional benefits to your skin and mustache. Jojoba oil, for example, provides great moisturization and helps to protect the mustache from harsh elements, including heat.
  • Butters, and we don’t mean the kind you eat, are great conditioning agents and when used in mustache wax, they provide a creamier wax that is more pliable. Similar to carrier oils, butters can provide several benefits to the skin and mustache.
  • Petroleum Jelly is a common ingredient found in mustache waxes. This ingredient is used very much like carrier oils to make the wax more pliable. Petroleum Jelly has a very low melting temperature, something to be aware of if you are regularly in hotter climates.
  • Resin can be found in some mustache waxes that provide an extra strong hold. Resins result in a very hard mustache and can also make removal a bit more difficult.
  • Essential oils are often added to mustache wax. In addition to providing a variety of fragrances, essential oils can have some amazing benefits for the skin and mustache. Essential oils can be an issue for individuals with especially sensitive skin, so be sure to check the ingredients carefully if you have such skin issues.

Hold Level:

  • Light/Medium – This is the lowest level of hold available in a mustache wax. In most cases, you may not even feel the wax on your mustache once it has set. Waxes with this level of the hold will have more additional ingredients than beeswax. Additionally, some balms can provide this level of hold.
  • Medium – The next level of the hold will be found with almost equal parts beeswax to other ingredients. Medium hold is perfect for men attempting to train their mustache to lay a way quite different from its normal growth. Waxes with a medium hold may also be felt on the mustache after it sets. To avoid clumping or hairs sticking together, make sure to comb well to distribute the wax completely.
  • Strong – This level of hold is for dramatic mustaches, such as a handlebar mustache. You can use strong hold wax to train your beard. When using waxes with a strong, or higher, hold be sure to remove the wax completely between applications to avoid excess wax buildup.
  • Extra Strong – For those wanting to lock their mustache in place, waxes that provide extra strong hold will have the highest concentration of beeswax, with little if any other ingredients. Extra strong hold waxes are less pliable and harder to distribute easily throughout the mustache. Additionally, you must take care when removing these types of waxes, you may even need to use heat.

Packaging: Waxes come in a few types of containers. The most popular is a tin that has a wide lid to easily access the wax. Tins make seeing how much wax you have left very easy and controlling the amount of wax you use is also easier.

Roll-up tubes think lip balm tube, is a convenient packaging for some waxes. For some users that prefer to apply the wax directly to their mustache (for lower level hold waxes only), the roll-up tube makes sense. However, you will likely use more product with this packaging if you use it to apply the wax.

Squeeze tubes are rare in mustaches waxes, but they do exist. They are found in lower hold levels and are usually used in combination with a small mustache brush, similar to the size of a toothbrush to apply and distribute the wax throughout the mustache.

Scent vs. Unscented: Mustache waxes can be found in just about any scent you can imagine, as well as unscented. When choosing the waxes for this guide we avoided highly fragranced waxes as they are likely to appeal to far fewer users than lightly scented or unscented waxes. Due to the location of a mustache, using highly scented products can actually interfere with your taste buds and smell.

Color: Some mustache waxes provide more color pigment than others, and most do not have a strong color component. When choosing a mustache wax with color, you should try to match your mustache color as closely as possible to avoid any unwanted color influence.

Tips for Using Mustache Wax:

Warming Wax Before Use: Depending on the beeswax content of your mustache wax it maybe quite stiff. Rolling a small ball of wax between your fingertips can warm the wax. For really hard waxes, you may even want to warm the top of the wax with a hair dryer before using to soften the wax. Do so with caution as you do not want the wax to melt completely, or you are going to have a mess.

A Little Goes a Long Way: Always start with the smallest amount of wax, you can always add more wax, but removing excess wax can be time consuming and wasteful. Eventually, you will know how much wax you need to achieve your desired look.

Make sure to completely distribute the wax throughout your mustache before applying more wax. You can distribute wax with your fingertips or using a mustache comb or brush. Another possibility is to use a medium bristle toothbrush to carefully distribute the wax.

Not only is using too much wax a waste of product, but it is also harder to remove from the mustache. Additionally, excessive amounts of strong or extra strong hold mustache wax may be uncomfortable on your lip or crack with movement.

Work Wax From the Center Out: Applying wax from the center out will help to ensure that you cover the entire mustache without leaving an excessive amount at the center just under your nose. You can choose whether or not to part the mustache, if you choose not to, combing the middle at the end will eliminate over waxing.

Removing the Wax: How you remove your mustache wax will vary depending on the hold strength you choose and the ingredients in the wax. As mentioned above, waxes that include resin are the most difficult to remove and will likely require special wax removers that breakdown the wax.

Most waxes can be removed with warm soap and water. Although the type of soap you use is up to you, choosing a soap designed for facial hair is your best to thoroughly clean the wax away without being harsh on your skin or mustache. Hand soaps can be especially drying to the skin and mustache.

Some wax users use a blow dryer to gently heat the wax before combing it away. This may help to remove some of the wax, but will likely leave wax behind. Following up with facial hair soap and warm water will help to remove the remaining wax.

Conclusion

Whether your desire is to keep your mustache sleek and cropped or sport a high stylized stash like the handlebar or Fu Manchu, we’ve covered just about everything you need to pick the best mustache wax to fit your personal style, protect and sculpt your mustache, and leave your mustache better than before you used wax.

Mustache wax can offer you some amazing benefits and control over your mustache (and beard). With some practice, using mustache wax will become part of your daily routine, and you will wonder what you ever did without it. Till then, we hope you have found this guide helpful for finding the perfect wax for you.
